A few thousands of years ago, there was nothing, then God decided to make the world. Now God has so much power that He can do anything He wants to. He's got far more power than we can even think about.

When the big flood destroyed everything on the earth, God saved just eight people from drowning by telling Noah to build an ark, or a very big boat.

Abram lived with his wife Sarai in Ur of the Chaldees, which was near Babylon in the country which is now called Iraq.

Abraham and Sarah had been living in Canaan for quite a few years, and they had no children because they were old. Then once again God said they would have a son, and a little later Isaac was born. God remembered the promise he had made to Abraham soon after they had arrived in Canaan, and as always, God kept His promise.

It was many years since Abraham and Isaac had gone up the mountain to offer sacrifices to God. Abraham was now very old, and Sarah had just died. Isaac was grown up, but he had not married.

After Isaac and Rebelath had been married for a few years, Rebekah gave birth to twin boys. The eldest was called Esau. He grew into a red, hairy man who loved the outdoors. Isaac liked to eat the meat that Esau cooked after he went hunting and he loved Esau best.

Poor Jacob. He had been sent away from his family. He had tricked his own family, and it had backfired. His father was angry. His brother wanted to kill him. He had to run away. His mother had family in Haran, a long way away.

Joseph was the oldest son of Jacob’s favorite wife, Rachel. Jacob loved Joseph and made Joseph a lovely coat which made his brothers jealous.

After he was sold into Egypt when he was 17, Joseph became a servant for Potiphar who was an important member of the Pharaoh’s household. Potiphar came to trust Joseph completely and gave him very responsible work to do.

When Joseph was made the second in charge of Egypt, he collected up and stored all the extra crops during the seven years when there was plenty. Then the famine came, and it was so bad that the people were starving.

Over 500 years before the time of Jesus, there was a man called Daniel who believed in God. He lived in Babylon for most of his life, and he always obeyed God.

A long time ago there was a famine in the land of Canaan. In that land was a man called Elimelech and his wife called Naomi, and they had two sons. Because it was so hard to find food, they went across the Jordan valley to the land called Moab and made their home there for a while.

Many years ago, long before the time of Jesus, there was a man called Elkanah. In those days, men could have more than one wife, and he had two wives.

A long, long time ago there was a man called Jonah who believed in God. One day God gave him a message, and told him he was to travel quite a long way to a city called Nineveh.

Many years ago, the king of Israel was a man called Saul. Just near Israel was another nation called the Philistines, and they were enemies of Israel.

Long, long ago, about 1000 years before Jesus was born, God gave Samuel the priest a message. God had chosen someone to be the king of Israel, and Samuel was to go and visit a family in Bethlehem.

About 2000 years ago, there were two young Jewish people called Joseph and Mary, and they were engaged to get married. One day Mary was really surprised when suddenly an angel appeared and started talking to her.

Jesus had a cousin called John and he was just a few months older than Jesus; John was also specially provided by God. John's mother Elizabeth and father Zechariah didn't have any children as they were too old.

Many people followed Jesus to see the miracles that he did when he healed their sicknesses.

Jesus used to tell stories, called parables, which showed a message. One day he told a story about a man who had two sons, who both worked for him on his farm. Both the sons knew that when their father died, the farm would be divided up between them.

One day Jesus told the people a parable, which is a story with a meaning. This parable was about a man who bought some land for a big yineyard.

One day Jesus and his disciples went to a wedding in Cana, and Jesus' mother Mary was there too. Now Cana was in the north of the country, near the lake called Galilee, and it was fairly near to Nazareth where Jesus had grown up with Mary and Joseph.

A few years after Jesus had died, been made alive again and gone to heaven, a man called Saul hated the people who believed in Jesus. He was very nasty to them.

After Paul changed to believe correctly in God, he worked very hard for God. He travelled to lots of places telling them about God, but most of the people didn't want to listen.
